WorkSafe NZ 'first aid at work' guidance points to NZQA unit standards 6401 and 6402 (plus 6400 for higher-risk work), a minimum of 12 hours (8 hours for 6401/6402 alone), and a refresher every 2 years.

New Zealand's Licensing Criteria for Early Childhood Education and Care Services, administered by the Ministry of Education, require staff to hold a current first aid qualification from an NZQA-accredited provider built on unit standards 6401 and 6402. At least one first-aid-qualified person must be present per 25 children across all early learning services and kōhanga reo, with home-based services covered by criterion HS216, renewed every 2 years.

New Zealand has no dedicated Good Samaritan statute; protection flows indirectly from the Accident Compensation Act 2001, whose no-fault ACC scheme bars nearly all personal-injury lawsuits, so a rescuer is practically shielded from civil suit regardless of training. There is no general duty to rescue a stranger — the Crimes Act 1961, s 151, imposes a duty to provide the 'necessaries' only on a person who has actual care or charge of a vulnerable adult.

In New Zealand nurses are accountable to the Nursing Council of New Zealand for continuing competence, and holding an Annual Practising Certificate requires a minimum of 60 hours of professional development plus 450 practice hours over a rolling 36-month period. Maintaining resuscitation skills is part of that competence, and approved resuscitation and CORE life-support courses count toward the professional-development requirement.

No formal qualification is legally required to work as a Health Care Assistant or support worker in New Zealand's aged residential care, rest homes and home-and-community support, but employers frequently require a current standalone first-aid certificate that includes CPR alongside the preferred New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing. A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this expectation and should be renewed periodically.

Caregiver approval in New Zealand is governed by the Oranga Tamariki (National Care Standards and Related Matters) Regulations 2018, with prospective caregivers completing an assessment and induction training. Holding a current first-aid and CPR certificate — often arranged or funded through Oranga Tamariki and approved agencies — is part of being equipped to respond, in addition to the suitability assessment, and should be kept current.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in New Zealand, with certification generally valid for 2 years. Workplace first aid training (NZQA unit standards 6401/6402) includes an in-person practical assessment for CPR and AED, with theory completed online in a blended format, and a CPR refresher expected at least every 2 years (ANZCOR recommends annual).
